Romania – vampires and monasteriesAdded: June 2008
Here are the highlights of a cool 2 week tour of Romania, home of Dracula and megalomaniac dictators!
Bucharest has some really cool buildings from the communist era, the main one being the Palace of Parlament. It is huge!
1,100 rooms, 12 stories tall with 4 underground levels. It was built during the reign of the dictator Nicolae Ceau?escu. You can rent some of the rooms yourself – now you know there to throw your next birthday party!
Apparently the electrical bill is 300.000 Euro per month!
Here are some other photos from Bucharest:
Sinaia is a lovely mountain resort in Romania. The highlight is the Peles Castle which is near the town:
Sighisoara is a beautiful medieval town located in the Transylvania with cobbled streets and ornate churches. This is also where Vlad Tepes (“Dracula”) was born. Vlad had a strict zero tolerance policy for crime so any crime committed led to impalement. Ouch.
Cluj-Napoca is a cool university town with some great partying, this is the place to go to shake, rattle and roll!
Suceava has some truly amazing monasteries completely covered with religious paintings on the inside as well as the outside. Since the churches were often full, the visitors were able to follow the cermon by looking at the pictures on the outside:
The Danube Delta is the second largest delta in Europe with an amazing ecosystem. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is the place to go to watch wildlife!
Romania is still hidden gem without hoards of tourists, something which is sure to change in a not very distant future. Now is the time to go!
